Joe Jackson collected 20 points, seven assists and four rebounds as No. 10 Memphis fended off visiting mid-major power Belmont, 97-81, on Tuesday.

Wesley Witherspoon added 22 points on 8-of-8 shooting and Will Barton chipped in a game-high 23 points for the Tigers (1-0), who shot 59 percent (34 of 58) from the floor.

Belmont (0-2) fell to its second top-10 opponent in five days after suffering a 77-76 setback at No. 6 Duke last Friday. The Bruins, who won 30 games last season, do not have another ranked opponent on the schedule.

Memphis set the tone in the first half with it offensive efficiency. Witherspoon and Jackson combined to shoot 10-of-10 from the floor in the first 20 minutes as the Tigers took a 46-39 lead into the break.

Instead of cooling down, Memphis managed to pick up the pace in the second period as Barton got into the act. Barton and Witherspoon each had four points and the Tigers connected on five straight field goal attempts during a 13-2 run that spread the lead to 59-44 early in the second.

Belmont would cut it back down to single digits, 84-77, with 3:53 left but Barton made a layup to stop the bleeding and scored five points over the final 3:43 to help Memphis pull away.
